Jim Beachill – 2011 China Great Wall – Trek 7 Jiankou to Mutianyu

Jiankou to Mutianyu

An hour’s drive took us to the foot of the Jiankou Great Wall. We climbed initially for an hour until we arrived at the Zhenbei watchtower. The sun shone with clear blue skies and we sat and gazed around and took in the breath taking views. The Wall was largely in tis original condition and in places the bricks are crumbling and the vegetation taking over. For the next four hours the wall was virtually deserted until we arrived at the restored section known as Mutinayu where tourists appeared and became more frequent.

The wall was now a continual descent, quite steep in places and we ended the walk and left the Wall courtesy of a toboggan.

At the foot of the Wall a cold beer (for me) and a Subway sandwich was the perfect end!
