Denaby Signings

Denaby United secretary manager Matt Taylor yesterday announced the following list of Denaby signings for the coming Midland league season: Rimmington and Williamson (goal), Cooper, Brown (Backs), Markey, Goldthorpe, Southall, Barnes, Gillott, R. Grey, Roberts (halfbacks), Duggan, Pryor and Womack (forwards), who were with the club last season.

New signings are F. Powell (ex Bentley colliery), G. Rose (ex Wath Wanderers); backs, D. Hibbs (Ransomes), M. Knaggs (Tom Hill Y. C.); Halfbacks, L. Justice (ex Gainsborough and Sheffield Wednesday); outside right, E. Tinker (ex Worksop town), T. Himming; inside forwards, ex-Ransome and Marles, S. Fawcett, centre or inside forward, ex-Boston United, J. Bodin, ex-Sheffield City Surveyors, an inside right who showed promising form in the last few Midland league games last season, F. Paul, ex-Retford inside forward and C. Poole, Sheffield schoolboy international recently signed by Wolves, Brian Poulsman, inside or outside left from Penistone church.

Mervyn Law, who was a fine servant to Denaby United and has assisted Rawmarsh Welfare for two seasons, has rejoined the club, and two promising boys are A. Ingham, who had several trials with Aston Villa and hails from Mexborough, and J. Damant, an outside left who had several games with Colchester while in the Army. He is from Conisbrough. Derek Holmes, outside forward, will also be assisting the club next season when his youth club activities allow.

Mr Taylor said the club was still seeking a full-back, and was interested in a promising outside left from a second division club, and that if satisfactory terms could be arranged they would sign him.

Denaby will hold practice matches on August 6th and August 13th and will be pleased to give games to as many local boys as possible. Applications should be sent to Mr Matt Taylor, at 17 Hirst Gate, Mexborough, or to Denaby president, Mr Sam Peck, 16 Crook Hill Road, Conisbrough, or to any other official of the club.

Part of the stand on the south side of the ground is being recovered by labour under the direction of Mr W. Goodlad.

Mr Taylor said: “we are concentrating on youth for our playing strength. A transfer every season for the last six seasons has paid dividends.”

He pointed out that this must, of necessity, be Denaby’s policy as they were not in that happy financial position in which so many Midland league clubs found themselves. First Midland league match will be on August 20th Versus Goole at Denaby and on Tuesday, August 23rd, they will entertain Gainsborough Trinity.
