A Thrilling Revenge

Denaby United 0  Mexborough 3

On New Year’s Day, Mexborough won a glorious revenge for their Christmas day defeat at the hands of their neighbours, Denaby United. They could not have begun the year More happily

Mexborough have been pining for an away victory ever since the season began, and it had been denied them until Monday, when they accomplished it on the Denaby ground in brilliant fashion. It was a very convincing victory and left no room for two opinions as to its justice.

The ground was rather boggy, but the overhead conditions were perfect, and nearly 5,000 spectators crowded into the ground to see an exhilarating game. Quite half of them poured down from Mexborough and there was any amount of enthusiasm all around

Mexborough relied on the side that drew with Scunthorpe on Saturday, with one exception. Roberts was unable to appear, and Mexborough had to pick up a local recruit, Jack Whitehead of the Mexborough loco and risk him at right back. This initial handicap look more serious than it proved, for Whitehead played a sterling game after he got rid of his opening nervousness

Denaby were out with the team that drew at Wath save that Haslam was preferred to Coope at right back.
