Conisborough 51 Mexborough 52 for 7

Played at Conisborough, on Saturday, being the first of the series of matches arranged in connection with Conisborough Feast,

Mexborough were without Beckett, and Mountford had a place in the team for the first time this season. The Conisborough club had not their full strength, Norwood and Farrar being absentees. The home team won the toss, and opened with Briggs and Harrison to the bowling of Carr and Jenkinson. Briggs hit Carr for three, and Harrison scored a couple of singles, but in the third over he was bowled by Carr. The next wicket doubled the score. But then three wickets fell very rapidly. And only 29 were scored when half the team was out. Some hitting by F W Keys and Chapman produced a double change of bowling. Nicholson and H. E. Bennett going on, and this seemed brought the innings to a close, the sixth wicket falling at 38, and the whole of the team being out for 13 more runs, H. E. Bennett taking two wickets for three runs only.

Small as a total appeared on paper, Mexborough found that it required some getting, S. Livesey and Wilson scored 14 for the first wicket, but the second and third wickets only realised eight more. Bennett having hit 1 four being caught in attempting to repeat the performance Turner and G Livesey were unfortunate late run out and C. O. Pepper went at 39 for a duck, while only one later Wilson, who had played a fine innings of 21 was taken at square leg. 12 were still required to win when Nicholson joined Jenkinson. The latter, however, did all the hitting and the runs were eventually rubbed off without further disaster.
