They See How Their Local Paper is Run

“South Yorkshire Times” reporters have had to be “on their toes” on assignments this week for they have been accompanied by students of Conisbrough Northcliffe High School.

Four fifteen year old students have spent this week at Head Office in Mexborough, gaining an insight into newspaper life. They have been with staff reporters on assignments of all kinds and have seen just what kind of work the Job involves,

Kathleen Somers, Gillian Price, Philip Weston and Peter Wilcox volunteered for the project which is part of a scheme ‘organised by the Home and School Council, a body attached to York s University’s Derwent College.

When they return to school next week they will be expected to write an essay about their visit and this will later be assessed as part of their C.S.E. English examination,

All four seemed favourably impressed by newspaper life arid expressed hopes of becoming reporters when they leave school.

“I was pleasantly by what I saw of life on a newspaper,” said Phillip

“A reporter’s job seems to be very interesting. Something different happens every day and your work is not confined to a set pattern. It gives you an opportunity to meet all types of people and to get to know them.”

Kathleen said she volunteered for the project as she was hoping to be a reporter. After seeing Just what happens in a newspaper office she thought that the life of a reporter must be an interesting one, but admitted that there was far more work involved in producing a newspaper than she had expected.

“Finding news is not quite so easy as I thought it would he,” said Gillian, “but it is certainly interesting and our stay at the ‘South Yorkshire Times’ office has been a very worthwhile experience.”

Judging by the interest shown and the number of questions asked by our visitors it looks as though there might be at least four budding reporters at Northcliffe High School.
