Mexboro’ and District Cricket League – May 7, 1910

Star Green ‘un – Saturday 07 May 1910

Mexboro’ and District Cricket League.

Despite the unfavourable weather, the cricket programme of the Don Valley clubs was on Saturday brought a definite issue.

In all the three games big surprise was forthcoming.

Wombwell Main beat Mexborough on the latter’s ground by the emphatic margin of ten wickets, the biggest reverse sustained Mexborough since the formation the League.

Mexborough opened well, the new pro. Mellors, scoring 31 by careful cricket, but after Wombwell had captured the fourth wicket the home batsmen fell like chaff, and the innings closed with the score standing 71. The Wombwell first pair. Cusworth and Baker, knocked off the runs without being separated.

They made the Mexborough bowling look very simple stuff. “Billy” Brown, the fast bowler, one the hopes of the County, finding the wicket too slow for his liking. Mexborough suffered from the absence of Billy Scott and Tom Field, both good all-rounders, who were unable to assist.

Of course, they were without Tommy Hakin who has returned from footballing at Portsmouth to become a member of the cricket team.

The champions, South Kirkby, received severe a blow at Denaby, where last year, it will he remembered, they brought off a great victory, possibly their greatest of the season, in that they were left with two hours’ play to wipe off a score 186.

Thanks mainly to a great partnership Sandy Bairstow and O. W. T. Jessop, brother of great Gilbert, they got the runs, performance which went long way towards enabling them win the championship later on.

But on Saturday. Denaby turned the tables, for South Kirkby, perhaps the strongest batting side the league, collapsed against the fine bowling the brothers Robinson. The whole eleven were dismissed for a score of 37. Arthur Robinson, who bowled as well ever he did, taking seven wickets for 21 runs, and G L. Robinson three for 15.

“Arthur” made the ball turn three or four inches, and the wicket was certainly in favour of the trundlers as Cupitt, the South Kirkby veteran, evidenced later on.

P. C. Bury made the issue safe, after six Denaby wickets had fallen and the spectators breathed freely. By the way. C. Bury the captain of the Denaby side, actually made the top score, and incidentally made the first sixer of the season. Denaby batting through, got 69.

Swinton improved themselves by dismissing Mitchell Main for the low aggregate of 57, and secured victory by a margin of five wickets. Not for several seasons had Swinton managed to defeat the Mainers, and the result gave great satisfaction to the Swinton spectators.

Swinton were going badly until W. B. Fletcher came to the rescue, and scored 29. Mitched Mam were without their celebrity Irving Washington.’ and in batting too only one of the team to himself was young Roy Kilner, who contributed 19 runs.

This time Fred Turner gamed the bowling honours of the match. The “all rounder’’ took seven wickets at a low cost. This being Swinton’s second victory, they went to the top the League. For the good the game generally it hoped that bad weather of last Saturday does not indicate a coming repetition of last season’s summer.

The Mexborough Cricket Club are pushing on with their new pavilion schemes. The work of erection has been commenced, and will be pushed on as speedily as possible. In the South Yorkshire League Mexborough Res. the champions, met with unexpected reverse at Balby.

.Altogether surprises were the order of the first real opening day the present cricket season.
