Denaby Utd – Bridlington Town 0 Denaby 2 – Promising Start To The Season

6 September 1969

South Yorkshire Times, September 6th, 1969.

Denaby United Continued a most promising start to the season on Saturday by taking two well-earned points from Bridlington Town with a first half goal from Rodger Willey.

With injuries enforcing several changes in the team, Denaby had Rob Bennett at centre-half for his fist game against the “seasiders”. His link-up with Allen and Whitehead at the back surged well for the future, and Bridlington found the visitors defence a very hard nut to crack.

Bridlington did most of the attacking in the Yorkshire League match, by Denaby carved out the best chances, Sapey coming very close with a shot that beat the ‘keeper to strike the bar. The visitor’s, manager, in fact, was instrumental in the goal which clinched the points for Denaby. With half an hour gone. Sapey split the Bridlington defence with a fine dribble and provided Roger Willey with a golden opportunity to score. The winger obliged by giving the ‘keeper no chance from six yards.

This victory, gained despite an unsettled team, puts Denaby in a very good position. To take two points from a visit to Bridlington- one of league’s top squads last season – makes Harold Sapey’s job that much easier. He must be well satisfied with his team’s performances to date, having played three tough games and emerging with four points. The record now reads: Mexborough (away) 0-1; Selby (home) 4-3; Bridlington Town (away) 1-0
