Accidental Death
Miner Killed at Denaby Main

A verdict of “Accidental death” was recorded yesterday at a Conisborough inquest on Jim Stead (28) married, of 8 Hatherley road, Bowbroom, Swinton, who was fatally injured by burst of coal at Denaby Main Colliery on Thursday.

Wilfred Rodgers, of Bosville Street, Dalton Brook, said that their working place was apparently safe and well timbered. Stead was loosening top coal when there was a severe weight bump.

A large piece coal, measuring over 7 feet long and 4’6” deep, burst away from the coal face, and knocked out a prop.

Stead endeavoured to get away but the prop hit him at the back of the head and knocked him forward onto a tub.

He was unconscious when Rodgers reached him and was apparently dead when removed from the pit.
