Afraid Sons Would Give Her a “hiding”

A 49 year-old Denaby woman denied being drunk and disorderly, and told Doncaster West Riding Magistrates on Saturday, that she was found screaming in the street  late at night because she dare not go into her house in case her sons gave her a ” good hiding,” The woman, Florence Bellerby, housewife, Loversall St., Denaby was found guilty and fined £1

P,c. Sinclair told the court that he was on duty in Doncaster Road, Denaby at 12.10 a.m. on April 6th, Then he heard a woman’s screams coming from Loversall Street. He went to investigate and found Mrs Bellerby and told her to be quite and to go inside. He said that she continued shouting and started yelling. Her sons then came out and took her inside.

Bellerby said “I was not drunk. I was frightened because there had been an argument and I know that if I went in the house my sons would give me a good “hiding”. They did after the policeman had gone.”
