Conisborough Man Killed

Sergeant in R.A.F.

Sergeant Herbert Pilling, an observer in the R.A.F., only son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Pilling of Stanley Road, Sunnyfields, Doncaster, and formerly of Conisborough, has been killed on service. The funeral will be at Conisborough.

Sergeant Pilling was an operator at the Gaumont Cinema, Doncaster, for four years, and afterwards went to be chief operator at the Lyric Cinema, Wellingborough.

He joined the R.A.F. Volunteer Reserve in June. 1939, and quickly qualified as an observer. He was a crack road cyclist, and since joining the R.A.F. had many successes in athletics and games. At one R.A.F. sports meeting he won the 100 yards, quarter, half, and mile races on one day.

His father is a platoon commander in the Home Guard.
