An Exhibition of Miners’ Safety Lamps

An interesting photograph showing an exhibition under the auspices of the South Yorkshire Mining Society, in the Mexborough Secondary School last Saturday, of miners’ safety lamps.

The exhibition was arranged in connection with a lecture by Mr. W. Maurice, F.G.S., M.1.E.E., on “Modern mine lighting and gas detection.”

The photograph shows (on the left) Mr. G. W. Gulliford, of the Denaby Main Colliery, demonstrating a gas detector lamp which he has recently patented. A remarkable variety of lamps is also shown. On the right is seen a portable air-turbo electric generator which can be carried to any part of the mine. A rubber pipe connects it with the compressed air supply, and the coal face can be lighted by this means with six 40-candle-power lamps.
