Denaby Well Beaten.

Nott. County in Form.

Notts. County Res. 4, Denaby Utd. 1.

Denaby’s visit to Nottingham, yesterday (Thursday) had a much different result than their previous trip to the town, when they beat the Forest by 3-0. On this last occasion most of the honours of the game rested with the home club, but Denaby, though well beaten, were not disgraced by any means. They were beaten by 4-1, but there was not that margin between the merits of the teams. Notts. Displayed more dash and enterprise, and it was this that brought them their goals and their success.

Denaby brought in Gaffney at right back and Hill at outside-right while Cooper partnered Shaw on the left wing. A mistake by the Denaby defence let in the County to get a goal in the first three minutes, and the visiting attack thereafter had an uphill task. The goal came as a result of a long drive by HARRIS. The shot should have been saved, but Bisbey missed his kick, and Bromage, being unsighted, the ball just rolled over the line and into the net. This was a stroke of atrocious luck for Denaby and all the forwards’ work for failed to retrieve this opening error. Godfrey made especially praiseworthy efforts to turn the balance in Denaby’s favour, but he had no luck. During the game, the right wing was perhaps the more prominent.

Bromage, though beaten four times, was not to blame for the heavy score against the United. The County eleven was a strong one, and started off in fine style before a crowd of only about 300, despite the warm and inviting weather. Just after the scoring of the opening goal, already described, Bromage carried out a long spell of defensive work, culminating in his fisting out in great style a shot at point blank range by Allen, a very good save. The United attack was opened on the right but the County defence was sound, and Godfrey had a good shot well stopped. Notts. Went further ahead before the interval, FROST scoring.

Five minutes after the resumption, GREATOREX dribbled clean through. Bromage, as a last resort, went out to meet him, but the home forward lifted the ball coolly over the goalkeeper’s head into the net. It was five minutes from the end when GODFREY got Denaby’s only goal, but two minutes later ALLEN put another on for the County.
