It is Goals that Count!

Denaby United 2 Skegness 0

for a long time tt looked as though Denaby United were going to lose their home Midland League match with Skegness on Saturday, or at least have a point taken away from them, but they pulled round with two well taken goals to finish on top.

Hampered by the mud both teams had difficulty in making the ball do what they wanted, but it was Skegness who made the best of the conditions at first, against a disorganised Denaby side, playing more directly and forcefully.

Skegness left-winger Dunn was kept well supply but too often his defence splitting work was wasted as the rest of the forwards gave him little support.

Twice in as many minutes early in the first half US the full-back behind, and swung the ball across the goalmouth – but both efforts came to nothing.

Centre forward one was another Skegness thorn in Denaby site, roaming in front of the other forwards ready to pick up anything that might be turned into a chance.

Empty Net

Campbell should have put Skegness ahead from a superb chance, laid on by Dunn. The winger beat Wild and slipped the ball wide of Hough but Campbell, with an empty net, glaring him in the face, miskicked and the ball bounced harmlessly to Jones who cleared upfield.

Denaby didn’t cause a real deal of the danger to the Skegness goal, and apart from a 15 yard shot in the fourth minute by King, which Crawford turning round the post, and a 37th minute header from Gray, which Banks kicked off the line, Skegness, had little to worry about in the first half – until the 41st minute.

Denaby swept upfield, Hall hit the ball across the goalmouth, chest high, and with a magnificent effort Monk flung himself at it to head past Crawford.

Denaby open the second half with more determination and better football got the upper hand, and gradually began to assert their superiority.

They got more and more on top as the game grew older. Luck went against King again 5 min from time when he crashed a shot against the bar, but in the last minute, Grainger added the finishing touch – or rubbed salt into the wound, whichever side you supported.

He was coolness itself as he received a pass from King, refused to be hurried into a first-time shot, and calmly took the ball round the black to hit it past Crawford.

Skegness may have thought themselves a little unlucky, but it’s goals thatcount and they just didn’t get them.
