ASSAULT AT CONISBROUGH

At Doncaster West Riding court on Tuesday Terence Keith Price, 24, labourer of Old Mill Road, Conisbrough was fined £10 for assaulting Edward Hallion of Annerley Street Denaby and occasioning actual bodily harm; £5 for driving without due care and attention and £3 for using obscene language.

He pleaded guilty to these offences but not guilty to using a van without lights and failing to report an accident but was fined £2 and £5 respectively for these offences.

Inspector W H Heron prosecuted said that about 10.50pm on June 27th a group of people were standing outside the Eagle and Child Conisbrough. Mr Hallion saw the van coming down the road not displaying lights and shouted to the driver. The van swerved on the wrong side of the road and struck Mrs Margret Newton of Annerley street.

It stopped about 15 yards lower down West street. Mr. Hallion told the driver about the lights and as he reached the car a hand swung out of the window on the driver’s side of the vehicle and Mr Hallion was struck to the side of the head with a hand brush. Price got out of the van and struck Mr Hallion with a number of blows with the hand brush about the head and fell to the ground. Defendant used obscene language to Mrs Newton and then got back into his van and drove off .Mr Hallion and Mrs Newton had however noted the number of the van.

Interviewed by PC Talbot accused denied he had hit Mrs Newton with his car and said he was not there at the time of the accident. He was interviewed again after being identified by a witness but made no reply when cautioned. Price was stated to have previous cautions.
