Assault in Denaby Pit

John Donnelly, miner, was charged by Herbert Smith, trammer, for an assault in Denaby pit, about noon on the 23rd ult.

Donnelly was also charged by the colliery Company, for whom Mr Hickmott appeared, with a breach of special rule 21 of the regulations in force at the pit.

Mr Moore explained that defendant left his working place contrary to orders, and went to where Smith was working. He wanted to take away Smith’s lamp, saying that it was his own, Donnelly struck Smith a severe blow on the eye, knocking him against the coalface. They had a struggle, defendant was eventually taken away by his mate.

Defendant was fined four shillings and costs in each case.
