Assaulting the Police at Denaby

James Regan, miner, of Denaby, was charged with being drunk and disorderly at Denaby on September 6, and also with assaulting PS Ramsay in the execution of his duty

Prisoner pleaded guilty to both counts

Supt. Hickes said this was a serious case assault, and furnished another instance of what the police in the Mexborough and Denaby districts had to put up with.

P.S. Ramsay walked to the box with a limb and appeared with a sticking – plaster  patch over his eye, and a bandaged finger.

He said that at 10-40 p.m. on Sunday night, he was on duty at Denaby. He there saw the prisoner along with two other men. Prisoner was drunk and using obscene language. Witness spoke to the men with reference to their conduct. Two of the men, including defendants desisted; but a man named Fallon, kept on swearing. He refused to give his name, and when witness tried to arrest him Fallan became violent and knocked witness down. Prisoner then turn witness over and kicked him in the eye. Witness received two kicks in the ribs from the prisoner, and Fallon made his escape. Witness closed with prisoner, but a crowd of about 40 people assembled, and witness was also assaulted by persons around.

The prisoner was fined 5 shillings and costs for the drunken behaviour and sent to prison for a month with hard labour for the assault.
