Manvers Beat Welfare in Close Game and Win Second Cup

Manver Main 3, Conisborough Welfare 2

Manvers and Conisborough provided good and entertaining football in the final of the Association League on Saturday at Mexborough. Manvers just scraped home by 3-2, aided by a headed goal by Rothery, that came about fifteen minutes from time. This is the first time Manvers have reached the League final, but they have already won the Montagu Cup and are in the final of the Challenge Cup. Conisborough have reached the final twice before

The first half was even, but WARREN gave Manvers an early lead. Conisborough were undaunted by this setback and began to force play into the Manvers half, and consequently Harvey distinguished himself by making some wonderful saves. The equaliser came through a penalty after an infringement in Manvers goalmouth, CLIFFORD converting the spot kick. This success stimulated Conisborough an after more pressure on Manvers goal WHITEHEAD gave them the lead. That completed the scoring for the first half.

The second half saw Manvers rally, but Conisborough did not yield easily, and gave as good as they got for the first twenty minutes. Then the spell was broken by BIRKINSHAW who dashed through to equalise for Manvers. Ten minutes afterwards a pass across the Conisborough goalmouth was headed in by ROTHERY. Conisborough fought gamely to make the scoring even, but Manvers defence took no chances.

Howarth the young Conisborough centre half did some good work for the losers, though Birkinshaw gave him a lot of trouble. Harvey in the Manvers goal had a good game and was ably supported by a sound defence. A work of praise can be added also for the Conisborough defence. The game provided one of the best finals seen at Mexborough this year.
