Attempted Wife Murder at Conisborough

William Dransfield (52) miner, was indicted for having wounded his wife Sarah Dransfield, with intent to murder her, at Conisborough on the 14th April.

Mr Watson prosecuted; prisoner was undefended.

Visitors defence was that he was affected in the head through a sunstroke he received in India, and that on the Sunday morning in question he did not know what he was doing. Jealousy had also entered into his mind.

Prisoner was found guilty of wounding with intent to do grevious bodily harm.

His Lordship said that the Jury had taken a very merciful view of the case, but it was necessary that the prisoner should be severely punished.

He must go to Penal Servitude to for five years.

Prisoner: I don’t remember doing the deed.

His Lordship: if there is anything wrong with your mind you will be taken proper care of.
