Denaby´s Fine Win

Wath Beaten by Five Wickets Wath 159 Denaby 170 for 5 Worthington 6-29 L Robinson 72*, Shoosmith 63*

A game full of interest was provided at Denaby on Saturday, Wath being the visitors. It was a game of changing fortunes, first one team and then the other appearing to have the game in their hands. But, thanks mainly to good bowling by Worthington, and some fine batting by G.L. Robinson and Shoosmith, both of whom put up their highest scores of the season, Denaby achieved victory by five wickets.

With the exception of Cyril Turner and Len Cutts, the Wath batsmen did not shine and Irving Turner, for once was not allowed to get going. Cyril Turner and Cutts, however, made a fine third wicket stand, wich produced nearly 100 runs. After their departure came a collapse, Worthington doing some remarkable work with the ball. A couple of maiden overs from him produced three wickets, and in his last over he got Wath´s ninth and tenth wickets with successive deliveries. His final figures were six for 29. Shoosmith took two for 34.

Denaby´s opening suggested that they were in for an overwhelming defeat, for Greenwood, Narraway and Foster were all back in the pavilion with only 12 runs recorded. But the arrival of Luther Robinson marked the beginning of the end for Wath. Tibbles stayed with him for a while to stop the rot. Then came anther check for Denaby, when Worthington returned without scoring, but the Denaby skipper then found the partner he needed in Shoosmith, and these two went on to pass the Denaby total, and were unbeaten at the close. Robinson batted soundly and with skill, hitting nine fours, Shoosmith reached 50 in a little under half-an-hour, and his 63 included two sixes and six fours. Both batsmen played all the bowling with confidence, and neither gave any chances.

Luther Robinson´s previous best this season was his 44 against Bentley, on the Denaby ground, and Shoosmith, too, had not had such a productive innings this season. Hargreave´s two wickets cost only 29 runs.
