At Doncaster, Saturday, William Hinchchcliffe, who was described as a bookmaker, was charged with street betting at Conisbro’ on the 14th inst.

The case was proved by P.c. Brearley and Sergeants Ramsey and Hayes, who saw defendant in the Low Road, men stopped him, and money changed hands.

He was searched and £3 18s 6d. found upon him in silver. He had also sporting paper and some blank slips.

Four children from 8 to 10 years of age were among the persons who went the defendant.

Defendant asked if it made him a bookmaker because sporting paper was found upon him.

The Officer; I don’t think so.

It was stated that there had been numerous complaints against defendant, who admitted that he was a “runner” for bookmakers, and a fine of 40s. and costs was imposed.
