Mexborough & Swinton Times, December 29, 1917

Private Charles Blades (West Yorkshire Regiment)

60 Clifton Street, Denaby main, was killed in action on November 22 and leaves a widow and two children. He enlisted last May, and went to France in September. Capt W Ward in a letter to the widow, writes:

“Your husband was loved by all who knew him, and we all join in sending you are deepest sympathy in your sad bereavement.

Knowing him as we did, we can understand what the loss or so dear a husband means to you.

He died a gallant death, fighting alongside his comrades to the last, and he suffered no pain at the end. His loss is a great blow to us all; it is deeply regretted by officers and men of the company.

He was one of my best soldiers, always cheerful smiling, and is missed by everyone with whom he came in contact.”
