Boxing – Steve Firman

20 March 1931

Mexborough & Swinton Times – Friday 20 March 1931

On the Sheffield bill, Steve Firman, who is becoming a favourite with Sheffielders, showed punching power far beyond anything he has previously displayed, and his bout with Joe Mills (Bolton) was stopped in the second round. Mills started well enough and the first round was fast. Immediately the pair came together in the second round Firman went into his man and a right to the jaw put Mills down for seven. He rose unsteady, and a left to the head put him down again, this time for four. Firman gave him no chance to recover and Mills twice more went down. Then Firman knocked him through the ropes , and the referee stopped the contest and awarded it to Firman.

This week-end the Denaby Boxing Club receive the Bentley Club in the Welfare Institute. Firnan tops the bill in a six-round contest with Jarvis, a winner of over 100 lights and heavier than Firman.

Here is the challenge that we have been waiting for:

Steve Firman is willing to meet any flyweight in England, with the exception of Jack Brown (the champion), for a side-stake or purse. We should like to see him oppose Yates or Began before he ventures out into the world.
