Breaking rules at Cadeby Main colliery

John Lewis, Thomas Dale, and John Bates, miners, of Denaby, were charged with breaking special rule 85, which provides that no one shall touch the signal down the pit but the hanger on.

Mr H. H. Hickmott prosecuted on behalf of the Denaby Main colliery Company, and said the company had no desire to press the case against the defendants, as it was their first appearance, and it was purely out of mischief that the thing was done, they were liable to a penalty not exceeding 40s.

Fined 15s, including costs.

John Bates was charged with breaking special rule 100, which says that all miners shall leave their tools and working places in order.

Mr Hickmott said that on this date the defendant had only set two spragg’s who he ought to have set six, he was a practical miner and had had nine years experience, he had been at Cadeby about six weeks, but the rules were similar roundabout.

Prisoner said that it was half-past nine when he set the spikes, and they were supposed to leave off work at 10. If he had stopped to set the for it would have been 12 o’clock when he left is working place.
