A few particulars concerning Brother E Marks may be interested.
He left the service of the Denaby and Cadeby Colliery Company a short time ago, when he was engaged as foreman boilersmith, to take up the tenancy of the Wagon and horses, Wakefield.
He commenced employment at the Denaby Colliery Company 27 years ago. He subsequently worked at Manvers Main, Mexborough Plant and the local sheds Keadby. Whilst at Keadby he contracted a severe illness, and underwent two serious operation at Leeds infirmary. At this time was a member of the pride of Mexborough Lodge of the Sheffield Equalised Independent Druids, and through the influence of the Druids he was able to recuperate his health at the sea bathing infirmary at Scarborough. Then he returned to the Mexborough Plant and was subsequently promoted to the Leicester Local Sheds as boilersmith. During his stay there, Mr Marks made many friends, and was instrumental in organising a Lodge of Druids there called the “Hope of Leicester” Sheffield Equalised Independent Druids.
Mr Marks came to Denaby Main six and half years ago to the position of foreman blacksmith at Denaby and Cadeby Colliery. Interesting himself in friendly Society work, he soon got into a harness again. He was appointed treasurer, but took over the duties as treasurer of his old Lodge. In conjunction with other officers, Mr Marks helped to set the Lodge in a sound position, with the result that last February he was presented with a certificate of merit for having introduced 35 adult and juvenile members into the Lodge. On his retirement from the Denaby Colliery Company Mr Marks was presented with a beautiful oak rolled top writing desk.
