Brutal Assault by a Denaby Collier

Joseph Humphreys, collier, of was charged with being drunk and disorderly the house of John Slater, the Reresby Arms, Denaby, and also assaulting Wm. Thompson, miner, September 2nd.

Mr. Hickmott prosecute, and said on the night question Humphreys was in the Reresby Arms, and was disorderly He was requested to leave, and in doing so said to Thompson, If you did my brother last night you cannot do me now.” The previous night the defendant’s brother had attacked a lad, and complainant had protected the lad. Thompson wont to the gas to light his pipe, and defendant struck him, fracturing his jaw.

Thompson complained to Police constable Midgeley.

Defendant followed him along the road, saying, ‘”Now, you, I will let some more, and dealt him a blow on the head, knocked him down, and then kicked him. Two men were coming along the road, and the defendant made off.

Fined 20s. and costs for the assault, and 10s. and costs for refusing to quit.
