This letter has been received : “I am sorry to learn that your husband was killed about 5 o’clock on the ninth of January.

I may tell you it is a task I do not care for but being your husband’s chum it has fallen to me to give you the awful news. I can assure you he died a true soldier and was one who never shirked his duty.

The gun section send their deepest sympathy and I hope the Lord will give you strength to bear your trouble.”
