May Procession at Denaby

Nearly 2,000 Roman Catholics from Denaby took part in the May procession in Denaby on Sunday evening. The colourful procession was led by Denaby’s St John’s ambulance band and paraded from the Roman Catholic school through Tickhill Street, Doncaster Road, Loversall Street, Wadsworth Street and returned to the church where a sermon was preached by Father D. J. O’Keeffe. Father A. G. O’Kane conducted the service assisted by father Oakey. The procession was led by father O’Kane.

The May Queen, four other queens and the boy king and their attendents dressed in bright costumes helped to make a colourful pageant. The Queen’s attendants carried statues of our Lady and of Maria Goretti.

Father O’Kane said that they had reverted to their prewar type of procession where many of the children had costumes specially made for the day and the parents had fully cooperated in making the day a success.
