Charge against Conisborough Contractor.
Thomas Fox contractor, of Consibro’, was charged with having no signalman preceding a locomotive on the highway at Kilnhurst, on the 18th inst.
Pc. Pilmore stated that on Thursdays week, at about 8:30 in the morning, he was on duty on the highway at Kilnhurst, when he met the traction engine belonging to Mr. Fox.
As soon as the driver saw him he stopped the engine. Witness asked why no man was in front and he was told that the signalman had gone to Mr. Charlesworth’s Saw mills for some chips.
The signalman returned in a few minutes and said he expected the driver would have stopped the locomotive while he was away. He(the officer) was asked to say nothing about it, but he replied that he should report the case.
In answer to the chairman, the clerk said the was this was the first case of the kind that had come before the Rotherham bench.
A fine of 20s. And costs was imposed.
