Colliery Fatality at Denaby Main.

Sheffield Independent – Wednesday 05 March 1890

Colliery Fatality at Denaby Main.

At the Montagu Arms, Mexbro’, yesterday, an inquest was held on the body of John Robert Good, collier, employed at the Denaby Main Colliery.

The inquiry was attended by Mr. Wardell, inspector of mines, and by Mr. Chambers, manager of the colliery.

The evidence showed that the deceased was seriously injured by a fall of roof, and that he was removed to the Cottage Hospital at Mexbro’ after having the wounds temporarily dressed in the pit. Ha died on Sunday.

A filler named John Oswald Street, said he was with the deceased when the dirt fell upon him. He liberated the man, but he was then unconscious. It was quite true that the roof was “overhanging,” and that the deceased put no prop up, notwithstanding that there was plenty of timber about.

The Inspector of Mines said that accounted for the accident.

Coroner said no Act of Parliament could save a man being killed under such circumstances.

A verdict of ” Accidental death ” was returned.
