“Throwing Money Away.”
Judge on Compensation Paid by Denaby Pit Company.

Before Judge Turner at Doncaster County Court yesterday a claim for increased compensation was brought against the Denaby and Cadeby Colliery Co. by William F. Flannery, stoker, 11, Byron Road, Mexborough.

In 1907 applicant was hurt the pit and had have his left leg amputated. His compensation varied from 6s. 6d. to 13s. per week. He was given light work, and in January, 1915, was working as a horseman and he received 6s. 6d. compensation and £1 9s. 0d. in wages.

In 1916 he became a stoker at the Staveley Oil Company’s works at Wath, receiving £3 per week. He gave this in August,1916, to work as stoker at the Mexborough Urban Council electricity works at £3 12s.0d. per week. He received his compensation during that time.(According to Mr. O’Kell, for the applicant),

His Honour Why! His wages were more than he earned at his old job.

Mr. Dale (for the company): The company were not aware that he was receiving those wages.

His Honour: I don’t wonder that coal costs so much when they go on throwing money away.

He gave an award for the company with costs.
