Conisboro’ Mother asked for Fine

The mother of Frank Crookes (21), a Conisborough glass hand, told the Court that Frank didn’t know the taste of liquor. It was quite true he didn’t come until 10 minutes to one the other Sunday morning, but PC Lundy was wrong in saying he was drunk.

“Dear Frank would do such a thing. He couldn’t appear, as he had got work at Cortonwood.”

Superintendent Hickes suggested an adjournment, so that the defendant could attend and prove that he wasn’t drunk.

“No,” said Mrs Crookes, “never mind about his innocence; put a fine on today.”

She was asked for eight shillings.
