Brake Snapped
Conisborough Cyclist´s Narrow Escape

A fifteen-year-old haulage hand of Conisborough summoned at a juvenile court at Doncaster on Friday, for riding a cycle dangerously, advanced the excuse that his brakes snapped as he was descending the Castle Hill.

P.C. Gregory said he was sitting in the Police Station which was on the hill when he saw the youth at 8.25 p.m. on June 25 th riding furiously down the hill. He ran outside and saw the youth had turned the corner and later he heard a crash. When he went along he found the youth picking himself up. He told him his brakes had snapped, but when the constable examined the machine he found it was only fitted with a front wheel brake and that was not very perfect.

The lad said he had borrowed the machine and had not examined the braking system before he went out on it.

Mrs. Peel, the presiding magistrate told him in future he should see that everything was in order. Under the circumstances he would be discharged under the Probation of Offenders Act and he would have to pay 5s. 6d. costs being allowed a month in which to pay.
