Conisborough Man Welshed At Doncaster Races

On Saturday a number of minor charges were heard at Doncaster Police Court arising out of the races on the previous day.

James Pinder, bookkeeper, Westminster, was summoned for welshing John Chadwick, a glassblower of Glasshouse Row, Conisborough in the shilling ring.

Complainant had 5/- on Tumbling Rector; when he went for his money the prisoner said he could not pay as he had “nowt.”

Witness stuck to him, and prisoner then said he would “pay him with a stick.” Prisoner ran away, but he was caught and given over to the police.

Reply to Mr Andrew, witness said cause I’m not a racer. I was having a ‘lake’ or I should not have been here today.

A fine of 40 shillings and costs was imposed.
