A Conisborough Sergeant and The Coppers

at Wakefield on Wednesday at a meeting of the County Council, Mr WH Day of Conisborough, wrote that he had tended 37/6 in payment of a fine to the local sergeant of the police, who however refused accept it.

He had collected the money from sympathise, who threw their pennies into a sheet.

Mr Quest said the man tendered the all of the money in coppers, and it was refused, as not been a legal tender. (Laughter)

Mr Dunstan thought that under the circumstances the sergeant should have accepted the money, and on his suggestion the Committee passed a resolution that the sergeant had not acted wise in refusing it.

Theft By A Lodger

At Doncaster on Monday John Powell, late of Conisborough, was charged with having stolen a jacket and vest, valued at 7/-, the property of William Burn, at Conisborough, on 17th of March.

Prosecutor, who lodged with the prisoner at New Conisborough, said he went to work at 5 o’clock on the morning named, and when he returned he missed the clothing. He had given prisoner permission to wear the jacket before, but not on this date.

Annie Webb said the prisoner owed her 15 shillings for leaving without notice.

PC Jenkinson said he arrested prisoner, and in answer he said, “I don’t think I stole them; they were lent me.

Committed to prison for 14 days.
