Conisborough Notes.

New School

I am pleased to find out that our school board are at last realising the importance of immediate compliance with the educational department instructions to build a new school for the accommodation of children at New Conisborough. They are now getting almost to fever heat, having two meetings a week so as to the business. It is quite evident they do not wish representatives of the press to be present, or they would not arrange their meetings at 5 p.m. however, if they get on with the business properly that is a most important point.

The education Department keep urging them on, sending two or three letters per month, and they are now taking cohesive measures with the board, and have decided to withhold the school report – including the grant – until something definitely settled. Her Majesty’s Inspector (Mr Thurnbull) is to meet the board and determined the site so that there should still be visible signs of progress.

Urban Powers

The Urban Powers Committee met last week and settled many of the questions asked by the county council. A further meeting is to be held tonight (Friday), when it is expected progress will be made. I hear that a rate payers meeting is to be called on the subject at an early date.

Hospital Sunday

At the Hospital Sunday committee meeting held on Tuesday night. It was decided to hand a significant sum of over to the Mexborough cottage hospital and a similar amount to the Doncaster infirmary, that been the amount at their disposal after paying all expenses.

Votes of thanks were accorded to singers, buyers, speakers, secretary, treasurer, and also to the public for their support on behalf of the two institutions Messrs Bates and Fowler were deputed to hand the monies over to the Doncaster and Mexborough authorities. A special vote of thanks was passed to Mr Earnshaw for the use of the timber for platform purposes.

Temperance Mission

The U. K. A. Temperance Mission Van visited Conisborough on Sunday last. A meeting was held in Mr B. J. Clarkson’s field, presided over by Mr B. J. Dufton: Mr A. W. Hall (Sheffield) and Mr Bruce (Leeds) were speakers. A similar meeting was held at Denaby on Monday night, both meetings being well attended.

Jubilee Dinner

The Jubilee dinner held at the Eagle and Child on Monday was a splendid meal, the meeting throughout being of a very enthusiastic character. Messrs Ogley, Jones, and Butcher presided at the tables. Capt. James, of Rotherham, had specially been invited, but was unable to be present; he, however, sent a telegram hoping the company would have a jovial time, deeply regretting his absence.
