Conisborough Notes – Organist – Nearly Struck by Lightning

August 1898

Mexborough and Swinton Times August 26, 1898

I hear there has been a great competition for the post of organist at our old Parish Church.

A good number of musicians have applied for the post, but this number has been reduced down to two, one of these being a lady.

I am told the gentleman who officiated on Sunday night last gave great satisfaction.

I hear that Mr. Arthur Moody the genial landlord of the. Alma Inn Conisborough had a narrow escape from being struck by lightning during the severe storm on Monday morning.

This gentleman intended going by an excursion which left soon after midnight on Sunday, consequently he had to start from home right in the middle of the storm.

As it was pouring down with rain he took with him an umbrella, but he had not proceeded far before the lightning struck the umbrella, which it completely wrecked, though Mr. Moody escaped with only a severe fright.
