Conisborough V.C. On Leave

Conisborough’s V.C,, Sergeant Lawrence Culvert, paid an almost unnoticed visit to his home in Denaby yesterday after six years in Peshawar, North-West Frontier Pass, India, where he is stationed with the K.0.Y.L.I. ‘

The fact that he was on leave was almost unknown and he was not recognised made his way to^ Conisborough Council offices, where he had business.

When Sergeant Calvert gained the V.C. capturing a German machine-gun and crew on September 12th, 1918. the people of Conisborough subscribed to presentation of over £500 to him in recognition of his valour.

Besides the V.C., he has gained the Military Medal and the Belgian Order of Leopold and three other decorations.

Sergeant Calvert will be on leave for six months, at the end of which time he will back to India to complete his service of 21 years.
