Champions in Master Form Against The Rest

cricket-toss

The Mexborough and District Evening Cricket League junior champions, Conisbrough played some masterful cricket on Sunday to defeat the rest by nine wickets. It was unfortunate that some of the players for the rest did not turn up, leaving the team with only nine men.

The Rest, on winning the toss, batted first and got off to a good start with R. Mason (19) and A. Breeze (39) scoring 62 for the first wicket. Then disaster struck The Rest. With one run added C. Pears was run out for a “duck” and with the score at 67 Mason was caught by Allport off Taylor for 39 a fine innings, including two 6 hits.

The next five wickets fell at 67, Anderson being the only one to make a stand, finishing with 11 not out with the total at 79 for 8.

Early Wicket

When the champions went into bat it seemed that The Rest were in with a chance. The first wicket fell at nine, Armstrong being bowled by Breeze for 7. But with good batting by N. Taylor (39 not out) and K. Allport (32 not out) the rest score was passed with a total of 91 for 1.

After the match the league president, Mr F. C. H. Wadsworth, presented the Crane-Denaby cup to the Conisbrough captain. He congratulated both teams on producing some good cricket and said it was unfortunate that the rest had not had a full side. He thanked the Conisbrough club for the use of the ground and the ladies for providing excellent refreshments.

The Conisbrough captain said that the winning of the junior championship had been a team effort all season and then thanked the players for their team spirit all season.
