Conisborough rejoices over Lord Roberts´s success at Pretoria
The news of the entry of Lord Roberts into Pretoria on Tuesday last, was received with great rejoicing in Conisborough.
About seven o’clock the band paraded the streets playing patriotic music. In front of the band two youth´s marched with an effigy of Kruger tied to a long pole; also Lord Roberts on a white charge, who was represented by Mr Frank Keys.
After their visit to the principal parts of Conisborough, they adjourned to Wellgate, and fixed the effigy on the top of the well, and then set fire to it, amid the cheers of the crowd.
While the figure was burning the band played the dead March,” and “rule Britannia,” after which cheers were given for her Majesty the Queen, Lord Roberts and others.
