Conisbrough Signs – Stranger in …?

Stranger in…?

“Stranger in Paradise” is the title of one of the current popular songs but I was far from that yesterday afternoon (writes a “South Yorkshire Times’ reporter) when making my first “official” visit to Conisbrough.

Some Conisbrough felt may think they live in paradise, and I am not disputing that. My grumble is the lack of or the bad siting of street name plates in various parts of the town.

Been a complete stranger I had to rely, I tried to rely, and the nameplates to get around town. But that was exceedingly difficult in parts, for instance, around the Eagle and Child hotel. Several of those converged near there, but I could find the names of only two of them – New Hill and West Street. The New Hill sign was hidden under another notice. I had difficulty in finding Claremont Terrace, for which I could see no label.

After asking a “local” for directions, I saw two more persons go up to him immediately afterwards for assistance. Up on the Conanby estate I also found confusion in parts, especially near crossroads.

Surely the local council can afford a little expensive to repaint the new or extract new nameplates at the places.

On my way back I came across the clearest sign to be seen. This stated there was a first aid post nearby for the last war. It may be wonder how long some of the less readable signs had been in existence.
