The Cricket Matched The Weather at Denaby

Denaby and Cadeby were beaten by three wickets in the last over of their match against Pilkington Recreation at Denaby on Saturday.

Denaby scored their highest, total of the season when they put on 166 for five in just under two ‘ and a half hours. Pilkington’s were soon in difficulties, losing their first wicket for six runs, their second and third for 10 and they had five wickets down for only 28 runs. Webster and Keefe.

However, put on 81 runs for the sixth wicket to save Pilkington’s and Webster carried on to hit the winning run off the fifth ball of the last over.

Partnership of   71

Denaby provided some entertaining cricket after a slowish start. A Partnership of 71 runs between Arthur Ellis and Dick Cory in just over 40 minutes provided very entertaining cricket, as both batsmen hit out all over the field and with the sun shining the cricket ‘ matched the weather. After a fine 1 innings, Ellis made the first bad Stroke of his innings when he hit the ball back to the bowler and he was caught by the bowler for 49 runs. Cory went on to score 63 runs, including two sixes. Off one over he hit 20 runs (two sixes and two fours).

A Hat Trick

After their early setback in losing five wickets for only 28 runs (in which time H. Newton took a hat trick), Pilkington batsmen J. Webster and B. Keefe took the score to 109, adding the 81 runs in 54 minutes of delightful cricket. When the last over was called Pilkington’s needed 12 runs to win. Off this over Webster showed his class when he scored 2, 6, 0, 2, off the first four balls of the over and with the fifth ball hit a four to win the match.

Each side tried seven bowlers. H. Newton for Denaby, took four for 33 in 14 overs.
