Cruelty to a Pony at Denaby.

August 1901

Mexborough and Swinton Times, August 2.

Cruelty to a pony at Denaby.

Walter Reed, pit lad, Denaby, was summoned for cruelty to a pony in the mine, on the 16th July, by the Denaby Main Colliery Company.

Mr Gichard, who prosecuted, said the offence happened at 6:30 PM on the date in question. The lad was a pony driver, whose duty it was to take two tubs from one part of the mine to the other, and was ordered not to take a heavier load without special instructions.

Two tubs was the proper load, but on this occasion he took more than his proper load, a tub loaded with props, which doubled the load.

Naturally, the pony could not pull the load. A deputy who was near to, saw the lad kick the pony three times, and marks and bruises could afterwards be seen on the forelegs.

When the deputy remonstrated with the lad on his conduct, the lad said, “You are no gaffer of mine.” He then struck the animal again. He also used bad language to the deputy, and picked up a piece of wood and threw it at the pony.

They knew that a number of cases of that time came before the Court. The company looked upon the case as a serious one. The Chairman said they must treat those dumb animals properly.

He would be fined 10s and 16s 5d costs
