Former well-known Yorkshire Council wicket-keeper, George Allen (70), died at his home, 23, Montague Avenue on Sunday, and cremation at Doncaster will follow a service at Conisbrough Church today (Friday).

Mr. Allen, a native of Derbyshire, was considered by many people to be worthy of a place in County cricket, and once had a trial at Worcester. They wished to keep him but he refused to stay on for personal reasons.

He played in the Bassetlaw League for Clowne, where he lived until the age of 24, and was in their championship team in 1928. He played for many years in Bullcroft’s Yorkshire Council team but his longest association in the same competition was with Denaby, where he was captain for seven of his 19 years’ service. He retired from the sport at 56 and later was made chairman of the club.

Mr. Allen played in many special matches with former England captain F.R. Brown, and he coached Johnny Wardle in bowling when they played together in the Denaby side before Wardle became a County player.

Mr. Allen worked as a miner all his life, and had lived previously at Bullcroft, Duckmanton, Langwith, Armthorpe and 35 years at Conisbrough.
