Denaby 78 for 4 Wombwell 75

May 1909

Star Green ‘un – Saturday 08 May 1909

Denaby’s First Victory.

Denaby have evidently survived the shock their initial defeat at the hands of Wath and are now coming to form from a combination of players said he the strongest ever got together at the club.

The improvement that came in the match with Mitchell Main (which was drawn) was carried further at the expense of Wombwell, who were soundly beaten by superior all-round cricket.

Wombwell, batting first, on a beautiful wicket, could only total 75, a task which the Denaby batsmen subsequently mode light of. The only Wombwell man make much stand against the home bowling was IC. Thomas, whose score of 29 must be accounted a good one in the circumstances. The new men of the Denaby  eleven appears likely develop into attractive cricket personalities. #

In W. H. Thompson they have a West Indian and old schoolmate of C. L. A. Olivierrie, so conspicuous a figure Derbyshire for several seasons. Thompson is a cricketer that’s going to bring delight to Denaby, that is, judging his form Saturday, for was the most destructive agent with the ball, as well as a useful contributor with bat. When he did the “hat trick.” the brothers Robinson extended congratulations in the up to date football wat, i.e. nearly rung his hand off!
