Splendid Work of Sewing Party

The fact that the Denaby and Cadeby Collieries Ltd have paid their half year allowance, amounting this time to £23 in respect of the coal, rent and lighting of the Denaby Main Institute, reminds us that this company has also contributed substantially to the general patriotism of the village at this time.

In the first place, it ought to be pointed out that the Chairman of the Company, Captain Maurice Pope is at the front with his regiment, and that the collieries and had been depleted of something like 1000 of their workmen by the heavy drafts made on the district by voluntary enlistment.

Then the splendid work of the Denaby Party, which meets three times a week in the Girls Institute, is only possible by the generosity of Mr W.H.Chambers, the managing director of the company. He supplies all the material which these very effectively, organised by Mrs Williamson and Mrs M. Soar use.

Up to the end of June, since the commencement of the scheme in October, they had made and dispatched the following:
336 flannel day shirts, 33 cotton night shirts, 397 flannel vests, 379 pillowcases, 329 pairs of socks, 354 hankerchiefs, 24 helpless case shirts, 120 woollen comforters, 11 chest protectors, five sleeping helmets, 57 flannel nightshirts, 74 body belts, 105 pairs of bed socks, 25 bed jacket, 74 pyjama suits, 51 pairs of mittens, 27 pairs of slippers, 18 face flannels and 12 flannel bandages.

The Colliery Company also contribute £20 weekly to the Denaby Relief Fund, independently of the workmen’s subscriptions, and they allow free rent, coal, and light to four hundred families of Denaby men at the front, in addition to the Belgian families.

By the way, referring to the Denaby Main Institute, it should be mentioned that 30 of its members are now serving with the colours.
