A First at Denaby

Although Denaby and Cadeby’s newly formed athletics club cannot be accredited with a 100%. Success in the running of its fifth annual sports meeting on Denaby United football ground, Tickhill square, on Tuesday, a great deal of credit is due to the officials who were, at times, working under the most difficult conditions.

One of their biggest “headaches” was keeping children off the track during races because of their alteration of the date of the meeting from Saturday, July 14. Many of the appointed track stewards were unavailable, and the children, consisting of a large percentage of the spectators, flooded on to the track despite continuous appeals by the officials.

Because of the change of date, several competitors were absent, adding to the complication of the organisation of the sports.

Dorothy Hyman, England’s schoolgirl’s champion, representing Hickleton Main youth club, came well up to expectation by winning both the 100 yards and 220 yards races for girls under 18. Doreen Whiteman, also from Hickleton, won the ladies 100 and 220 yards. Second in both ladies’ races was June Clough, who recently gained the Vicktrix Ludorum title in Mexborough Grammar School sports, In the youth’s high jump (under 18 years), the winner was H. Woffenden, of Mexborough Grammar School, with a jump of 5ft. 2in.
