Denaby and Cadeby 116 for 6 Steel, Peech & Tozer 115
Denaby and Cadeby retained their excellent form of the last month with a comfortable four wicket victory at Denaby over Steel, Peech and Tozer.
Steel Peech have qualified for the Council’s play-offs, so in recent weeks Denaby have beaten both the South Riding League representatives in the Council quarter finals. But for a bad start to the season there seems no doubt that the Denaby side would have been in a challenging position for the play-offs.
Put in to bat. Steel, Peech’s got off to an excellent start. Ken Cooke looking in splendid form, and the Denaby side were pleased to see him go, being first man out, caught by R. Dodd on the boundary edge off the bowling of Dick Cory.
After Cooke’s dismissal, wickets fell pretty regularly thanks to some fine bowling by David Hough (5 for 30), Cory (2 for 17) and Dick Lawley (2 for 29), with the result that Steel, Peech were all out for 115, a not too formidable total on a good wicket.
Denaby openers, Ray Dodd and Arthur Ellis, gave them a fine start, 45 being on the board before the first wicket fell. With their score at 80 for three. Denaby seemed on their way to a comfortable victory, but a fine bowling spell by Sissons (3 for 8) caused a temporary collapse. Dick Cory and David Hough, however, saw them to victory without further loss and it was fitting that Hough, who had bowled so well, should get the winning run.
Ellis hit a fine 42 and he was well supported by R. Dodd (22), and B. Exley (16).
