Denaby 126 for 9 Sheffield Utd 146 for 4

The meandering of Denaby and Cadeby from victory one week to defeat or a draw the next, has been one of the outstanding features of the Yorkshire Council this season.

On their home ground on Saturday, just a week after giving Rockingham a trouncing, Denaby fell foul of a fine fifth wicket partnership from Sheffield United S.R.’ and could only score 126 for 9 in reply to the visitors’ 146 for 4 declared.

Losing opener J. Pattison, caught by Hough off Neil Pearson’s bowling for only 4, Sheffield looked in trouble as the score crept to only 29 with four wickets down.

Denaby’s Dick Lawley was in fine form and had claimed three of the four, for only 29 runs.

But opening bat, R. Parker and fifth wicket man, E. Webster, dug themselves in and put on 177 runs. At the declaration, Parker was 66 not out, and Webster 60 not out. Lawley had taken 3 for 76.

The gauntlet was down, but Denaby were hardly quick enough to win and they forced a draw instead. With Arthur Hough top scorer at 26 they had nine wickets down at close and were still 20 runs off Sheffield’s total
