Denaby Were In a Hustle Against Thackley

Denaby and Cadeby Cricket Club were on top form in their first Yorkshire Council fixture of the season on Saturday when they defeated Thackley.

Thackley, who had only played two games, reached only 125 into an a half hours for the loss of nine wickets. Denaby’s 127 four were made in 68 minutes – almost two runs a minute!

Thackley got off to a very weak start – their opening batsman, Tetley and Place, being dismissed by Newton for 6 and 10 runs respectively.

The main threat to a Denaby victory was the fourth man in – G. Long. His rate of scoring soon took him to 60 before he was when out to the second ball of a Cory over. But even after Long’s wonderful innings. Thackley’s “tailenders” were dismissed for 19 runs.

Ellis and Oakley opened Denaby’s innings, and Oakley’s magnificent innings of 55 put Denaby well on the way to victory. After piling up the runs against Garnett. Oakley faced the slow spin bowling of Long and scored 20 runs from the over, including a six and three fours. Long changed his field and Oakley had to be content to complete his innings of 60 in ones and twos until he was bowled by Crossley with the total 74 for 1. Straw was out for a “duck”, Waddington got four, and T. Platts, playing in his first season with Denaby got 10 not out.

Final shock of the innings was the dismissal of Ellis, who had scored an extremely useful 28 before being bowled by Crossley. Platts was joined by Downing. And between them they took the total to 95. It was Downing who sent up Denaby century with a beautiful six, following which he took his own total to 21 not out, and Denaby’s to 127 for four.
