Elsecar Win By 7 Wickets At Tickhill Square.

Denaby and Cadeby losing their first four wickets for 12 runs, lost their Yorkshire Council fixture with Elsecar by seven wickets on Saturday. A sixth wicket stand by Waddington and Downing put on 99 of Denaby’s 146 runs, and although Elsecar lost Baxter for a ‘duck,’ they went ahead to score 147 for three.

Elsecar’s Hammerton made short work of the opening Denaby partnership by sending Oakley back to the pavilion for a ‘duck.’ Ellis scored only six before he was caught by Swallow off Standidge and his partner. Cory, was also dismissed by Standige for six runs. The dismissal of Taylor made Denaby 12 for four.

Platts, however, hit a very useful 22 before being caught by Baldwin off Hammerton, and the sixth wicket partnership of Waddington and Downing came together.

The Elsecar bowlers certainly did not expect to have 99 runs knocked off them by a middle wicket pair, but that is what happened.

Waddington went for 46 – caught by Baxter off Clayton, and Downing, after a wonderful innings, scored 53 before Neville collected a high ball knocked off Brooks.

The ‘tall-enders’ went for only four runs, Hirst and Belton scoring two each, and Williams a ‘duck.’ Newton’s innings came to an abrupt end before he had had a chance to open his score, when last man, Belton, was caught off the bowling of Standidge for two.

Elsecar needed 147 runs to win, but like Denaby, their innings began with a shock – Baxter being caught by Downing off Newton before he had opened his score. A fourth wicket stand between Doug Smith and E. Neville was the highlight.

Doug Smith quickly took his total to 70 not out. Neville also batted brilliantly, scoring an extremely good 36 before the innings was declared at 147 for 3.
